Imphal, February 24 2011:
While appreciating the Government of India's policy of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, the Kuki Women Union, Manipur (KWUM) has decried that the Act has been shelved in cold storage when it came to tribal areas of Manipur.
In a memorandum submitted to the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the KWUM highlighted that Primary schools in villages are poorly staffed with minimum facilities besides having no infrastructure whereby students can study and play.
A semblance DPC was conducted to recruit Primary teachers, HMT/HGT and nominal results were declared following which approval order was conveyed on April 22, 2010 .
But immediately selection orders were cancelled and the State Cabinet decided for recruitment of teachers for 11 months on contract basis.
Conveying that tribals of Manipur have undertaken various agitation like sit-in-protest, bandhs and blockade for immediate issuing of offer forms but without any response, the KWUM appealed to the UPA Chairperson for immediate intervention into the issue.
The KWUM further appealed to Sonia Gandhi to persuade the State Government so that the results of the DPC for recruitment of Primary teachers are declared at the earliest and basic requirements of schools like teachers, buildings, furniture, playground etc are provided without any delay.
