Imphal marked as special seed zone for Muga rearing

Imphal, June 23 2012: Following a detailed study to explore the availability of Tumitla plantation and possibilities of introducing Muga Sericulture from June 11 to 13 this year, Imphal valley has been marked as a place which can be exploited for Muga silkworm rearing as a special seed zone.

The team of scientists was led by Dr P Jayaprakash, senior scientist and Head, Muga Silkworm Seed Organisation, Central Silk Board, Guwahati and comprised of Dr S Subharani Devi, scientist and N Tiken Singh scientist as well as district sericulture officers of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur and Churachandpur.

A brief note prepared by the team leader Dr P Jayaprakash said that they visited Bamon Kampu, Keirao Wangkhei, Naran Konjin and Thangtek in Bishnupur, Pearsonmung in Churachandpur and other areas.

During the course of the exploration, the team found that most of the farmers have Tumitla plantation abundantly and the quality of the foliage is luxuriant and suitable for conducting Muga silkworm rearing.

The best period for silkworm rearing is from July to September.
