Imphal, April 22 2017:
Located around 10 kilometres from Imphal along Imphal-Saikul route, Khundrakpam Chingkhu Government High School, a school which has survived all these years due to the dedication and efforts of parents is still facing shortage of teachers and non-teaching staff.
The school was given a new lease of life by the concerned parents of the area who could not afford to send their children to expensive private schools but still did not want to ruin their children's future.
According to Nongthombam Phulindro, secretary of the School Management Development Committee, the Government school known as KC High School did not have even proper benches and desks, let alone adequate teachers nd students.
Nonetheless it was eventually brought back to life by the concerned parents who formed the committee to overcome the shortcomings from 2013-14 .
He pointed out that the school, which boasts around 700 students from classes I to X, was the only Government school from Pangei to Sagolmang which produced successful class X students and has received aid and support from the local MLA ever since its inception.
"Every Saturday, the students clean the school and paint the walls etc.
The only problem is shortage of teachers.
Only eight teachers are left at the school", he added.
The teachers are hired by the committee and are usually paid Rs 3000 per month.
The local MLA provides the funds for four of the teachers while the committee somehow manages the remaining teachers.
"The committee even sell off extra rice provided for mid day meal by the Government to pay the salaries of the teachers.
The kitchen, library and toilets of the school are in deplorable conditions and there is not even a separate room for the school's Headmaster", Phulindro conveyed.
T Ratankumar, the Headmaster of the school pointed out that he had written many times to the concerned department to provide teachers for the school but to no avail.
Local educationist W Gopen stated that the parents and the committee themselves monitor the students from the morning assemblies till the end of school hours and even see to it that the teachers reach the school in time.
The school even manages to provide coaching classes for students appearing class X exams.
