Imphal, December 20, 2013:
Call it gross error or utter inefficiency on the part of officials concerned, total number of electors outnumbers total population above 18 years of age in eight Assembly Constituencies of the State, according to official records.
Taking serious note of the blunder, the Election Commission has directed the State to re-compile error free electoral rolls for the particular constituencies ahead of the next Lok Sabha election.
Talking with media persons at his New Secretariat office today, Chief Electoral Officer O Nabakishore conceded that the total number of electors exceeds the total population above 18 years of age in some constituencies of the State.
EP ratio (elector-population ratio) reaches 110:100 in Heingang, Andro, Lamlai, Mayang Imphal, Wangjing-Tentha, Karong, Mao and Tadubi Assembly segments.
Concerned AEROs have been instructed to remove the extra electors, said the CEO.
Altogether 10,000 duplicate voters were detected in the electoral roll which is slated to be released on January 6 next year.
So far, 7766 duplicate voters have been removed from the electoral roll.
As directed by the Election Commission of India to make the electoral roll error free, necessary measures have been initiated.
Maximum efforts are also being put in to insert correct names, surnames, date of birth, photograph, age and gender of each voter in the electoral roll which would be released in January next year, Nabakishore said.
The ECI further asked to enrol new voters who are eligible to vote and delete names of voters who are not eligible.
