Imphal, November 20 2012:
Even though Ministers concerned have, on more than one occasion, assured that building construction of National Institute of Technology would be completed next year the enthusiastic claim is unlikely to materialise as construction activities are still at the nascent stage.
The NIT complex being planned at Lamphelpat is only at the 'load bearing test' phase till date and in all probability cannot be completed within the expected year 2013 .
During a site assessment visit today, it came to light that contractor/s of CPWD had completed soil testing exercises at the Lamphelpat complex but due to the loose-soil nature of the site the bases have to be strengthened which will take some more time.
Construction of a temporary hostel building would precede the administrative and classroom block construction works.
Since August 2, 2010 the NIT has been functioning from its temporary complex at Takyelpat with a total of 68 students from Manipur and outside.

According to the NIT Assistant Registrar Laikangbam Dorendro Singh there have been gradual increase in the number of students enrolling at the Institute in subsequent years.
To ensure that the students pursuing the job-oriented courses realise their goal upon completion of their respective courses, the NIT is planning to invite company representatives, informed the Registrar.
Maintaining that there are two hostels for male students and one for female at the Takyel complex with round the clock internet and power supply facilities, Dorendro confided that the main complaints from the hostellers concern water supply inadequacies.
Stressing on the need to expand the Institute at the earliest to accommodate more students, he suggested that the building construction work at the 341 acres Lamphelpat complex be expedited.
