Imphal, May 20 2012:
A one day social service camp was organised by All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers and Pullers' Welfare Association at The Great June Uprising Memorial Complex, Kekrupat today.
Speaking to newspersons at the camp site, Association president Thokchom Basanta said that the endeavour to maintain cleanliness of the complex is the least the Association could contribute when compared to the sacrifices of the 18 martyrs for the protection of Manipur's territorial integrity.
Informing that Kekrupat is also an important site for the Association as it was formed at the same place following a meeting in 2000, he said Association members had been taking part in similar activities ahead of the June Uprising commemoration functions in honour of the 18 martyrs, whose bodies were cremated at Kekrupat.

Pointing out that in the formative period since Kekrupat was converted to a memorial site the complex was well maintained and its sanctity preserved, Basanta lamented that after the Government took over the charge of maintaining the said site it has become a haven for anti-social elements.
Regretting that the moats inside the complex has also been turned into a public washing/bathing place, Basanta suggested that suitable measures be taken up by the Government to preserve sanctity of the site.
About 55 members of the Association took part at the social service camp which was carried out from 6 am till 3 pm.
