Imphal, September 19 2012:
Serving an ultimatum to the state government, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has threatened to launch various intense agitations if the government fails to take up necessary measures for redressing the existing problems in both the government and grant-in-aid colleges of the state including the long time demand for appointment of regular principals in colleges.
Addressing a press conference in this regard at its office at Keishampat here today, A Thoithoi, General Secretary of DESAM, pointed out that the post of Director of Higher Education is being held by the Additional Director as the in-charge since 1986.Likewise, there have been no regular Principals in almost all the government colleges and the works of the Principals are being carried out by in-charges who are unable to take control of the teachers and students.
This has led to degradation in the administrative set up of the colleges in the state.
Thoithoi further pointed out there are not enough books in the college libraries for the students for reference.
The laboratories are also not equipped with the required lab equipments.
Moreover, since there are no proper and separate toilets in co-education colleges, the students are finding hard to cope with the situation.
Water and electricity have also proved to be major problems in colleges.Lack of approved teachers is another main problem being encountered by the students.
Even there are some departments where there are no teachers at all, Thoithoi alleged, adding that under such conditions, majority of the students have been compelled to go outside the state for further education.
Thoithoi lamented that DESAM along with students of these colleges have time and again approached the authorities concerned to look into the problems being faced by the students.
However, so far no appropriate steps have been taken.
A memorandum has also been submitted to the Education Minister, Education Commissioner and Additional Director to look into the matter.
If necessary steps are not taken up within 15 days, DESAM along with the aggrieved students would be launching various intense agitations, Thoithoi added.
