Black stork sighted for first time in State

For the first time in Manipur, Tharoichabi Amubi (Black Stork) has been sighted at Phuba village of Senapati district.
Meanwhile, Forest officials have expressed a keen desire to develop a tiger reserve in Tamenglong.
A team of the Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN), Manipur Chapter who went for important bird area monitoring exercise at Phuba, Laii and Purul sighted three Black Storks at Phuba.
IBCN Manipur Chapter coordinator RK Birjit said that there was no record of Black Storks living in any part of Manipur.
This was the first time Black Storks were sighted in Manipur.
Ruddy Shelducks were also sighted at Phuba village.
The monitoring exercise is going on at particular villages located close to Nagaland border.

Meanwhile, a campaign on protection of wildlife including Royal Bengal Tiger has been kick-started at Tingkao area of Tamenglong district under the initiative of Divisional Forest Office, Tamenglong.
Speakers who addressed the campaign expressed keen desire to develop a tiger reserve by setting up a separate wildlife division and after combining wildlife sanctuary and eco-sensitive zones.
Notably, a Royal Bengal tiger was killed by some villagers at Tamenglong a few years back.
DFO Huri Golmei, Honorary Wildlife Warden Nehamia Panmei, ACF Napoleon Rongmei and Range Officer Kh Hitler too spoke at the campaign.
On the other hand, one Thangminlal Baite alias Lalboi s/o Jangkholun of Moreh Ward No 1 has been remanded to judicial custody till November 29 by the Court of CJM Chandel yesterday.
Thangminlal Baite alias Lalboi was handed over to Wildlife Wing, Forest Department after he was apprehended by troops of 24 Assam Rifles together with 10.70 Kg of Pangolin scale on November 13 .
It is said that illegal trade of Pangolin or its part is punishable with imprisonment for a term not less than three years and with a fine not less than Rs 10,000 under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 .
