A woman cadre of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) insurgent group reported to be involved in large scale extortion was arrested by police.
Irate locals destroyed a pan shop belonging to the KCP activist at Kodompokpi Mamang Leikai around 11 am.
She has been identified as Konjengbam Ongbi Nirmala Devi, 45, wife of K Bhumeshore Singh of Kodompokpi Mamang Leikai.
A report informed that she was nabbed along with her husband by a team of police commandos after receiving intelligence from her locality in the afternoon.
Sources said Nirmala Devi was working under the command of KCP valley operation crime control commander Mangal Meitei.
They said she was involved in issuing demand notes to several residents of Kodompokpi area to raise party fund.
Following report of her arrest, a large number of angry local residents stormed her shop and completely vandalized it.
Reports said the locals were angry that she was the mastermind behind carrying out extortion activities in the area.
The KCP Mangal group was accused of serving monetary demand letters to a Health Centre and a veterinary office at Mekola in Imphal West a few days back.
The staff members launched protests against the extortion demands appealing to the underground organization to withdraw them.
In another incident, a woman activist belonging to People's Revolutionary Party of Kangkleipak (PREPAK) was arrested by a team from Imphal West Police commandos during operation at Langol Ningthou Leikai in Imphal West on March 16 .
Meisnam Manileima, 31, daughter of M Pakchao of Heingang Marjing in Imphal West was staying at the residence of one Oinam Mangi when the arrest took place, reports said.
On the same day, a police commando team also held a cadre belonging to National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) identified as Laishram Deven, 40, hailing from Chalou bazar under Lamlai in Imphal East.
Our Staff Reporter adds: A team of Imphal West district police commando arrested one active member of ZUF while conducting frisking and checking near Yurembam Kabui Khul gate on March 16.According to a PRO of Police Dept statement, the arrested ZUF cadre has been identified as Benjamin Kamei alias Benny (40) s/o Ngamsin Kamei of Noney Part-IV and staying at present at Yurembam Kabui Khul, Imphal West.
Investigation revealed that he had extorted money from the general public, contractors and transporters in Imphal, Noney and Bishnupur areas.
He had transported arms, ammunition and explosives in different parts of Tamenglong, Bishnupur and Imphal areas.
A case has been registered at Patsoi PS and probe is on, it added.
