The 24 hr State wide general strike called by the Apunba Lup as a mark of protest against the Konthoujam AC by poll and imposition of AFSPA passed off peacefully without any untoward incidents today.
The general strike which began from last midnight thoroughly affected normal lives in Imphal East dist, Imphal West dist and Bishnupur dist.
With most of the public staying indoors and shops remaining closed, streets in the both the dists of Imphal West and East wore a deserted look.
Except for some private vehicles, vehicular movement on the road was also very thin.
Khwairamband Bazar the hub of commercial activities in the State resembled a ghost town as all inter district transport services came to a stand still due to the general strike.
However, employees of some of the offices of major depts located in the heart of the city attended their offices as usual despite the general strike called by the Apunba Lup.
Even though the general strike was carried out peacefully, a large number of meira paibis and students came on at Khurai Dinku Road and burnt the effigies of the Prime Minister, CM and Union Home Minister.
Similar effigy burning protest were also carried out at Bamon Leikai by the locals of the area.
In Bishnupur dist, the general strike paralysed day to day activities as most shops and business centres downed their shutters showing solidarity to the strike called by the Apunba Lup.
Vehicular movement in the area was also very thin.
In Jiribam, the 24 hr general strike called by the Apunba Lup was successfully observed with shops and educational institutions remaining closed.
Public also stayed indoors and vehicular movement in the area was almost nil.
However, the general strike had very little effect in other dists of the State as people went about their normal duties without any hindrance.
