Taking note of the many reported complaints about the inconveniences being faced by the returnees who are being quarantined in various quarantine centres in the State, Manipur State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) Acting Chairperson Khaidem Mani has said that the commission is conducting random inspection at the centres soon to take up appropriate action to ensure that all basic amenities are provided and no human rights are violated.
Speaking to media persons at his office at the Court Complex, Lamphelpat, Khaidem Mani said that the Commission received a petition filed by Youth Forum Protection of Human Rights yesterday, seeking the Commission's intervention for ensuring best care and adequate facility at the quarantine centres.
Mani said he has received complaints and information about returnees being allegedly deprived of basic amenities and poor management at certain quarantine centres.
While some have complained about food not being provided on time, some have claimed that certain quarantine centres lack appropriate toilet and other facilities, he said adding the MSHRC has taken the complaints seriously.
In order to ensure best care of the people staying in the quarantine centres and to ensure that the centres have required and adequate facilities for COVID-19 response, the MSHRC will be launching random inspections, he said.
Further noting that maintaining quarantine protocol and physical distancing besides taking up personal hygiene seriously are a must to avoid COVID-19, the Acting Chairperson reminded that Section 271 of the Indian Penal Code sanctions penalty against persons who knowingly defy or violate quarantine related rules/orders promulgated by the Government.
The COVID-19 pandemic has infected more than 43 lakh people and killed over 2 lakh across the globe, he said adding all including the returnees must follow the safety and preventive guidelines of the Government.
The Commission will also extend all possible assistance to the Government and frontline warriors in the fight against COVID-19.He also asked all concerned to lodge complaints if they encounter any problem or inconvenience in the quarantine centres on WhatsApp number 9862837830 .
