Ukhrul, May 13:
The HKL (Ukhrul Students' Union) has outrightly rejected the proposal of the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council to demarcate urban area at Ukhrul for the purpose of formulating and executing development plans and works under the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act, 1971 (The Manipur Hill Areas District Council 2nd Amendment Act, 2006) .
Addressing a press conference in this connection at the union office yesterday, the student body announced its decision of thwarting such a move maintaining that although the initiative of upgrading Ukhrul into urban area is appreciable, the proposed demarcation of urban area starting from the Northern end upto Tangkhul Naga Long ground is objectionable.
In this regard, the student body has also written to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UADC demanding revocation of the order at once or face the music.
The student body observed that originally called Hunphun, the area of Ukhrul does in no way end at Tangkhul Naga Long ground on the northern side.
But is indisputably extended to the populated places of Meizailung which also happens to be a historical place for all the Tangkhul community.
So the decision of the UADC to exclude some areas like Wino Bazar, Tangrei (Police Bazar) is objectionable.
If at all Ukhrul is to be declared as urban area then the whole of Ukhrul town extending from Phungreitang in the south to Meizailung in the north should be included, it demanded.
