Imphal, December 12:
Outrightly rejecting the proposal of the Government of India to review the Armed Forces Special Powers Act or to replace it with a more humane face, the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup today said that it will boycott the proposed visit of the Review Committee of AFSPA on December 27.Mincing no words, the Lup in a statement, today said that the proposal to review the Act is nothing but a stubborn refusal of the Government of India to accept the fact that the people of Manipur have for long been subjected to various degrees of atrocities and excesses by the security personnel under the draconian law.
The excesses and atrocities, the fake encounter killings, rape of women by security personnel, enforced disappearances etc etc have been highlighted for all to see and to digest and the review proposal floated by the Centre is nothing but amounts to saying that it will verify whether the grievances of the people are genuine or not.
The demand of the people is the immediate repeal of the Act, said the statement and giving another six months time to the panel to review AFSPA is nothing but condemning the people of Manipur to live under the mercy of the security personnel for another six months.
There is no reason why the people should be taken in by the false promises of the Government to review the Act, said the statement and added that the time has come for all to go ahead with the civil disobedience movement with renewed vigour.
The ban on teaching Hindi and NCC activities is still in force, said the statement further.
