Shija Palliative Care Unit inaugurated

The Shija Palliative Care Unit was inaugurated today at Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) .
The newly developed department and ward will be under the care of Dr Nandan Choudhary, MD Palliative Medicine, the only qualified specialist in this field in the entire North East India and this unit will be the first in the northeast to be rendering services under him, said a press release by SHRI.
Dr Nandan Choudhary has completed his MD in Palliative Medicine from AIIMS, New Delhi and has over six years of experience in Palliative Care and is the incumbent Joint Secretary of Palliative Care Society Imphal.
The hospital has allocated four beds of general ward on the 4th floor, Main building for the new department.

With today's inauguration, SHRI will have Palliative care facilities and services offered by the department includes severe pain management, supportive care for cancer patients, end of life care for a terminally ill patient, supportive care for end-stage liver disease, end-stage lung disease, end-stage renal failure, end-stage heart failure and supportive care for incurable illnesses that require hospital admission.
With this effort at Shija Hospitals, patients will have the opportunity to avoid intractable pain and may avail end of life care due to multiple reasons.
It may be noted that the department will be functioning in association with Palliative Care Society Imphal (PCSI) which has been rendering palliative care services free of cost since 2015 in the entire Imphal city.
PCSI has been instrumental in collaboration with the Government health department to start home visit palliative care in several districts in Manipur.
