Imphal, September 11 2021:
All Manipur Nupi Marup has drawn the attention of the Prime Minister regarding the Bill reserving 33% seats for women in the Parliament.
In a statement issued today, All Manipur Nupi Marup said this and added that the demand to have the said Bill passed in the Parliament has been raised since the last 25 years.
The Government has been keeping silent during the 25 years long struggle for the Bill, which can be taken as an action to subdue the women section of the Country, alleged All Manipur Nupi Marup in the statement.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) had given directives to all member countries in 1990 that the number of women representatives in their concerned Government should be increased to 30% by 1995, however the target is far from sight in India even in 2021 with current women representation standing at 14.4% in 17th Lok Sabha, added the statement.
Women in early times were more confined to household chores and did not take part in policy making or governance.
However, with changing time and role of women in the society, women are now playing an important role in every sector which has necessitated the need for adequate representation in the Parliament to raise voice and concerns of the women at the National platform, added the statement.
The statement added that after the 73rd and 74th Amendments, representations of women in local bodies including Panchayat and Municipalities have been increased to 50% .
All Manipur Nupi Marup reiterated the fact that BJP, which was in opposition during 2010 had opposed the Women Reservation Bill which was already passed by Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2010 .
