Mega Science festival begins

A five-day long Mega Science Festival (Science Meet, 2011) organised by Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) got under-way from today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Hapta Kangjeibung.
The main objective of the Science festival, which is being organised as an annual event of MASTEC, is to inculcate scientific temperament among the students.
Students from different parts of the State are participating in the Mega science event which was inaugurated by Secretary to the Governor of Manipur Dr RK Nimai Singh as chief guest and Director of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur Uttam Chand Laishram as honoured guest.
The inaugural function was presided over by Executive Director of MASTEC Th Surendranath Singh.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr RK Nimai observed that organising such science festival is essential to inculcate scientific temperament among the students.
To bring about development not just in science but also in other fields, we need to promote the innovative ideas of the students.
However, present unsettling situation in the State has given a serious impact on the academic freedom and creativity of the students.
In his presidential address, Surendranath explained that MASTEC has been organising science meet or festival as an annual event since 1997 under different themes and 'Chemistry in our life' has been chosen as the theme for this year in due consideration of the fact that Chemistry is all around us all the time and we cannot without anything without chemistry today.
In his address, Director Uttam Chand Laisram appreciated the overwhelming response of the students and the teachers to the science festival being organised by MASTEC year after year and said that this is a good sign.
Highlighting the activities of MASTEC towards popularisation of science, the Director mentioned that MASTEC has also started a programme on Discovery science through ISTV able network.
Apart from displaying the exhibits of the participants, the five day long annual science event would also witness various competitions in painting, declamation, science model, IT show, innovative technologies, Tara Mandal show, puppetry, quiz, etc.
