Imphal, October 06 2014:
Creve Coeur Camera (CCC) and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) installed in and around Imphal by spending crores of rupees from public exchequer have remained non-functional, without serving their purposes.
CCC and CCTV were installed at strategic and crowded locations in and around the capital city in 2010-11 with the attempt to prevent crimes like thefts, helping the police in law and order maintenance and track suspicious movements in the State capital.
However, due to inefficient maintenance, the CCTVs have been remaining idle.
Even some CCTVs were stolen.
A reliable source informed The Sangai Express that a huge amount of money to the tune of around Rs 8 crore was sanctioned for installation of the CCCs and CCTVs.
However the same have failed their intended purposes so far.
The existence of such cameras were reminded when casualties are claimed due to bomb blast incidents at crowded places like Khwairamband Keithel.
Dy CM Gaikhangam, in the backdrop of the bomb blast at MG Avenue recently that claimed a policeman and caused injury to 17 people, had said that the CCTVs installed in and around Imphal would be made functional again.
How far steps towards the fulfilment of the assurance of the Dy CM have been taken is yet to be seen, the source confided.
Although CCTVs in public places have failed, CCTVs installed around Governor's Bungalow, CM Bungalow and the quarters of Ministers and MLAs are fully functional, the source added.
In the meantime, big business and commercial establishments at Khwairamband Keithel area are using the CCTVs to their advantages conveniently.
CCTVs installed at such business establishments prevent theft.
A shopkeeper at Khwairamband Keithel said that shopkeepers earlier had a tough time serving customers and keeping a watch on their goods simultaneously during festive seasons.
Thanks to the CCTVs, the shopkeepers can now concentrate on their customers.
