Imphal, July 05 2020:
Locals/residents of Thangal Bazar and shop-owners have served the Government a 5-day ultimatum to halt and roll back construction/installation of 'seats' on the footpaths of the road that runs between the two Ima Keithels.
Speaking to media persons at Majorkhul Community Hall today, one of the shop-owners, Sorokhaibam Geeta said that the ongoing project in the bazar has shrunk the footpath (space) and it will lead to more traffic congestion when the bazar is opened after the lockdown.
The project to install the sitting places on the footpaths from Thangal Bazar Machin to Kasturi bridge is 'illogical' and the structures (sitting places) would become 'obstacles' in times of emergency.
As the bazar area is already crowded and has limited space, the structures should be removed to ease congestion, said Geeta.
The locals and the shop-owners had already appealed the Government to remove the installed structures and scrap the project, said Geeta reiterating that they would launch intense agitation if their appeal is not heard and addressed within 5 days.
She also stressed that the Government should take up necessary measures to safely open the bazar as soon as possible.
With shutters down since the lockdown was first imposed in the State, the shop-owners have been suffering and they need to open the shops to survive, Geeta added.
