Imphal, April 05 2020:
The proscribed UNLF has appealed to all money lenders, private banks and landlords to waive off interests for money lent out to petty traders and rents for rooms occupied by workers/daily wage earners and shops leased out to petty traders.
Highlighting the crippling effects of the lock-down triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic on the economically weaker sections of the society, a press release issued by the outfit's department of publicity director M Sak-hen appealed to all money lenders, private banks and landlords to waive off interest as well as rents for the lockdown period.
On account of the protracted lockdown, even survival has become a big challenge to economically weaker sections of the society particularly peasants, daily wage earners, women vendors and petty traders.
Payment of interests or periodic instalments for money borrowed from money lenders or private banks is now impossible as all economic activities have ceased since the lockdown began.
Likewise, many people who came from far off villages and staying in rented rooms in Imphal are also in no position to pay house/rooms rents because they have been deprived of their daily wages by the lock-down, the outfit pointed out.
Leaving aside interests and house rents, these people are really struggling hard for a square meal a day, it continued.
The outfit also expressed strong abhorrence against the audacity to import betel leaves by air cargo amidst the miserable situation besieging the whole population of Manipur.
