The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has demanded the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) to clarify the claims made in the CBSE book, Environmental Studies The Silver Lining, that the Meitei community of Manipur are tribals .
A press release issued by the information and publicity secretary of AMSU today explained that The Silver Lining is a book series under the NCERT New Delhi syllabus which is taught to students from KG standard to class V .
It questioned from where the publisher and those involved got the baseless information that the Meitei community are recognised tribals from Nagaland and added that the association will not take such humiliation of the people of Manipur lightly more so at a time when the demand for the inclusion of Meitei into the ST list is a burning issue .
It further demanded a clarification from NCERT at the earliest and also urged the State Government to take up necessary actions and direct the publishers concerned to stop publication of the said book, until the offensive and baseless information is removed .
It also urged those concerned to consult the right experts and to carry out proper research before publishing such baseless information as facts .
The union further threatened to burn all the said books in the State and to ban the book from circulation until the necessary corrections are made.
