Imphal, November 01 2021:
Demand Committee on Up-gradation of MBBS seats has appealed to the state government to take up necessary steps for increasing the number of MBBS seats for the state.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club here on Sunday, committee secretary Johnson Kamei said that the state government had time and again given assurance of increasing the number of MBBS seats in JNIMS from 100 to 150 .
However, the assurance remains unfulfilled since the government has not been able to develop relevant infrastructure.
The High Court of Manipur had also instructed the government to increase the seat capacity to 150 from the academic session 2021-22, he pointed out.
On the other hand, NMC and MARB in September this year issued notices that they could not make their inspection visits due to Covid-19 pandemic and the state authority cannot increase the seat capacity until their inspection.
Terming the notification of NMC and MARB as unfortunate for the medical aspirants of the state, Johnson charged the medical authority of showing biased attitude towards Manipur as they have conducted physical assessment in different states including Assam following which several medical colleges have been inaugurated.
The state government and health directorate should be held responsible for this matter, he said.
NMC had given approval to upgrade Churachandpur District Hospital to a medical college before 2017.CM Biren assured of inaugurating Chu-rachandpur Medical College in September and dedicating the same to the public but he has failed to keep his promise.
However, the construction work of the medical college is in good progress despite the delay in commencement and the committee appreciates the government for such progress.
He also expressed belief that the government will definitely inaugurate the medical college before the academic session 2021-22 .
He then appealed to the government to increase the number of MBBS seats in JNIMS and inaugurate Chu-rachandpur Medical College before the 2021-22 session, and conduct admission counselling for RIMS and JNIMS afterward.
