Imphal, November 19 2014:
Vehemently condemning the act of the police who reportedly destroyed its office properties today and pulled down the portraits of State martyrs, Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded an apology from the police personnel involved in the alleged wanton act.
Speaking to reporters at DESAM office this evening, Arambam Thoithoi, vice-president of DESAM said that it was very unfortunate that some police personnel stormed the students' body office and beat up students who were present inside the office today during the course of the police crackdown on agitating students who were demanding ILPS implementation in the State.
A police team led by an officer destroyed the properties of DESAM and beat up 33 students including girls, Thoithoi said.
Besides destroying the DESAM office properties, the police team also pulled down the portraits of three martyrs -Bir Tikendrajit, Paona Brajabasi and Thangal General which were hung on the office wall, he alleged.
It was very unfortunate that the Police personnel did not show respect to the portraits of the three martyrs who are highly revered and respected by the people of the State as well as the Government, Thoithoi said.
He asked the responsible officer and the police personnel involved in the act to apologise immediately while also urging the State Govt to take proper action against them at the earliest.
DESAM is all set to launch different forms of agitation unless the demand is met, he conveyed.
