Imphal, May 16 2022:
The Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO) has urged the State Government to keep companies on stand-by so that the Rengpang-Bishnupur section of Old Cachar Road is repaired without undue delay.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today RNYO and NH-37 Surveillance Committee Chairman Singamlung Dangmei said that the Rengpang-Bishnupur section of Old Cachar Road would suffer serious damages as a large number of heavy trucks are moving on the road following the collapse of Irang Bridge.
Construction of Rengpang-Bishnupur road was completed in 2019-20 and its defect liability period has already expired.
With many potholes doting it at different places and its sides overgrown with bushes and shrubs, the road is now in a bad shape but nobody is looking after it, Singamlung Dangmei said.
The road would certainly grow worse in the coming days as a large number of heavy trucks are moving on it following the collapse of Irang Bridge.
As such, the Government needs to keep road construction firms on stand-by so that necessary maintenance works can be done without undue delay.
He also urged the Government to upgrade Rengpang-Bishnupur road to the status of a National Highway and added that different modes of agitation would be launched if their appeals are not responded within 72 hours.
Meanwhile, the Old Cachar Road (Tongjei Maril) Development Committee has urged the Government to check deforestation activities at Laimaton Reserved Forest.
Citing an order issued by the Manipur State Darbar on March 6, 1941, the committee said that all the areas bound by Laimaton Napithapham (Panthabam) to the eastern foot of Towbung Kadang Peak (Kapu Kana Kak), Pana Lambi in further north, Heitup Makhong to Tingthoungamba to Yangoi Ningthou, Thence to Khoichingdon, turning towards Ngariyal and Youyangtek (Zoujangteng) fall under Laimaton Reserved Forest.
The committee also appealed to the Government to stop quarrying of boulders and earth in Laimaton Reserved Forest and set up a Forest Beat Office at Napithapham.
