'Trafficking of women from NE on the rise'

Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma yesterday said that trafficking of women from Assam and other parts of the North East has increased in the pretext of providing employment but used them for other reasons.
Sharma was participating in a meeting that discussed the recommendations of a study on Socio-Economic and Political Empowerment of women in North Eastern states held at the North Eastern Council in Shillong.
Stressing the need to empower women in the region, Sharma said that victims of trafficking should be given necessary support including skill trainings.
She also urged all political parties to reserve 33 per cent reservation for women.
Sharma also asked State governments in the region to provide financial support and empower the State Commissions so that they function in a much efficient manner.
The meeting was attended by State Women's Commission from all the eight North Eastern States.
