Imphal, August 14 2017:
The 70th Independence Day of Mani-pur was commemorated in a solemn function today under the aegis of Coalition for Indigenes’ Rights Campaign (CIRCA) today from 8 am at Sana Konung .
Titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba unfurled the Manipur flag wherein Pakhangba was embossed after priests and priestess performed a religious rite .
Many Thang-ta artistes also offered ‘sword-salute’ .
Courtiers (Phamnaiba) of Sana Konung such as Nong-thomba, Laipham Lakpa, Khwai Lakpa, Thangsu Lakpa and Ahallup Lakpa, K Sanatomba, Ningthouja Lancha and Yumlembam Meiraba attended the commemorative function .
Speaking at the occasion, Leishemba Sanajaoba said the historical event has been organised to convey the importance of the day to posterity.
The younger generations need to know that Manipur got its independence on August 14, 1947 .
The commemorative function is neither anti-national nor an event to challenge anyone, he said.
The event was observed since the time of Oken Sana at Sana Konung in a low-key manner, he said .
The essence of the day assumed great significance with the intervention of CIRCA.
It is also heartening to note that many organisations have started observing the day .
As recorded in the Puya of Sana Konung, on August 14, 1947, the then Political Agent GP Steward asked King Bodhchandra to come to his residence.
The King then refused saying that the Political Agent should instead come to the King's place.
However, Maharaja Bodhchandra along with his private secretary Sanasam Gourahari and aide Mayengbam Anandmohon went to the Political Agent's residence when he insisted that the order was from the Queen .
Midnight of that day, the Political Agent granted independence to Manipur.
The next morning, the Maharaja went to Kangla and invoked the blessings of Ibudhou Pakhangba, Sanajaoba said .
After that day, the Manipur flag, embossed with Pakhangba, was flown in front of the State Darbar.
These are facts and it is with the aim to spread the message to the younger generations that the Day is being observed by Sana Konung and CIRCA, he said .
Sanajaoba also suggested that people of the State join hands to observe the Day widely from next year .
Speaking at the occasion, Ningthouja Lancha said awareness campaign would be held by CIRCA from National Repentance Day which falls on Sept 21 to Manipur National Day on Oct 18.The highlights of the campaign would include awareness drive at villages, leikai and educational institutions about the status of Manipur and its political rights .
As part of the campaign, CIRCA would organise spiritual and cultural de-colonisation campaign from today .
Ningthouja Lancha further said that the Government should recognise August 14 as Manipur Independence Day.
The Govt has nothing to fear for remembering historical events .
The Pakhangba flag was flown during the reign of Maharaja Bodhchandra.
The flag was also flown high at Ukhrul at that time, he added .
