Rich tributes paid to 'martyrs' at Cheiraoching

Amidst tight security measures taken up by Manipur Police, the 'martyrs day' was observed at Cheiraoching cenotaph, Thangmeiband here yesterday under the aegis of the Families Committee for Observation of April 13 .
People coming from different places of Manipur paid floral tributes to the 'martyrs' at their cenotaph.
Taking April 13, 1982 where nine PLA cadres were killed after a fierce encounter with security forces, the 'martyrs day' is being observed every year on the same date since 1990 at the initiative of the families of the nine slain cadres and their relatives.
Although the High Court of Manipur gave permission to pay tributes to the 'martyrs', a large number of police personnel were deployed on Cheiraoching and adjoining areas.

Similar memorial functions were also held at Kodompokpi, Tekcham and Kakwa Nameirakpam Beni Leirak.
Lamps were also lighted at the gates of many residential houses in the evening as a part of the 'martyrs day' observation.
The 'martyrs day' was also observed at Jiribam at Chingdong Leikai yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The function was organised by the Family Committee for Observation of April 13, Jiribam at 9 am where leaders of various civil society organisations and people from different localities of Jiribam came to pay their homage to the slain RPF/ PLA leaders and cadres.
