Even as All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers' Welfare and Pullers' Association (Manipur) has called off its proposed 36-hour general strike, JAC Against the Decision of State Cabinet for Street Vendors has called a 48-hour general strike with effect from 4 am of May 7 .
According to a press release of the JAC, the general strike is being called in protest against police action on a group of women street vendors who had been to Raj Bhavan to submit memorandum to the Governor on May 4 .
The JAC said that police not only resorted to lathi charge but also fired several rounds of tear gas shells and arrested 25 women street vendors.
The JAC also expressed reservations over Government's decision of alloting space for parking lot at temporary market sheds.
Meanwhile, following release of its arrested office functionaries, All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers' Welfare and Pullers' Association (Manipur) has called off its proposed 36-hour general strike.
However, all the rickshaw thela pullers including hand thela pullers would suspend service at Khwairamband area if the police do not permit rickshaw thela pullers to park at Thangal Bazar, Masjid Road, Dharmashala, DK Steel, Kalibari, PC Jain, Sani Mandir, Ngari Gali and Bora Gali tomorrow.
