Imphal, March 01 2015:
BJP Manipur Pradesh has raised strong opposition against the Government's initiative to table Bills and get them passed by the State Assembly for establishment of Sangai University and conversion of DM Colleges into a State University.
In case the two Bills must be passed, they should be amended first, said BJP State unit president Th Chaoba.
The Government of India has already released Rs 55 crore as one time grant for establishment of Dhanamanjuri University.
The draft Bill drawn up for establishment of Dhanamanjuri University says that the Chief Minister would be its Chancellor and the Education Minister its Co-Chancellor.
This is something unheard of in any part of the world.
"Just imagine, there is President's Rule in the State after the same Bill has been passed and enforced as an Act, then who would be Chancellor of the University", Chaoba asked.
If the Governor is made the Chancellor in place of the Chief Minister after amending the Bill, BJP would accept it.
The Bills demand exhaustive debate before it is referred to the Assembly's Select Committee.
The Bills should be first opened to the public or else it should be withdrawn and the Government should wait for the next Assembly session, he asserted.
In case the Bill is passed in the present form, BJP would fight against it tooth and nail, Chaoba declared.
