Imphal, September 30 2011:
People of Kangchup area have opposed to the Government move of setting up of a police outpost at Singda dam under the administration of Imphal West district police.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at Kangchup today, chairman of Kangchup Area Chiefs' Association (KACA) Thongkholal Vaiphei observed that the people of Kangchup area do not have any reservation as such to opening of a police outpost for the security of Singda Dam and its surrounding areas.
But the proposed police outpost should be set up under the administration of Senapati district police and not Imphal West district police.
Asserting that the dam site is within the jurisdiction of Senapati district, Thongkholal recalled that when the State Government started taking up steps to construct the dam, six villages had given their consent and donated their land.
The compensation for the land donated too had been given through the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati district.
Taking into consideration of all these factors, people of Kangchup area would be constrained to launch intense agitation if the proposed police outpost is set up under the administration of Imphal West district police, and the State Government should be held responsible for any eventuality in this regard.
Vice-chairman of KACA ML Koireng pointed out that the name Singda itself has been derived from Singtha, which means firewood.
The foundation stone of Singda Dam had been erected in 1975 by the then Chief Minister RK Dorendro and it was inaugurated in 1995 by Rishing Keishing, who was the Chief Minister of the State then, Koireng recalled, while reiterating opposition against setting up of the proposed police outpost under the administration of Imphal West district police.
One RK Aphiu, a social workers from Ireng village, who was also present during the press conference, cautioned that narrow political outlook of setting up of the proposed police outpost under Imphal West district police would not auger well.
Representatives of KIM, Kangchup area, Kangchup Area Tribal Youths Organisation and Women's Union were also present during the press conference.
