Anti-tobacco drive from Feb 27

Chief Ministers of all the North Eastern States would undertake 'Campaign for Tobacco Free North East' under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at Guwahati on February 27 and 28 .
Taking serious note of the high rate of consumption of tobacco products in the North East region, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has emphasised to the Chief Ministers of the region the need to control tobacco consumption in their respective States.
Speaking to media persons about the campaign at Hotel Classic here today, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare CMO Dr L Swasticharan stated that it needs will of the Governments in the North Eastern region for effective implementation of Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003 .
The Act prohibits consumption of tobacco products including cigarette at public places.
The proposed campaign is aimed at effective implementation of the Act as well as the National Tobacco Control Programme throughout the North East region.
The campaign which would be hosted by the Chief Minister of Assam would feature workshop, mass rally, presentation of testimonies by victims of diseases caused by tobacco consumption, media workshop etc, said Dr L Swasticharan.
