Shillong, August 29 2012:
As many as 10 social organisations on Tuesday decided to stage a sit-in demonstration to demand the implementation of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1873 (Inner Line Permit) in Meghalaya.
"We have decided to stage a sit-in demonstration on September 3 near the additional secretariat to demand for immediate implementation of the ILP to detect illegal immigrants entering the state," Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People leader Joe Marwein said.
The organisations also appealed to all the village chiefs of various localities and the public to come forward and support for their demand.
Marwein said the 10 organisations, including the Khasi Students' Union also demanded from all political parties to legislate the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1873 during the upcoming monsoon Assembly session.
"The threat posed by influx has reached an alarming state that in some parts of the state, where illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Nepal have outnumbered the local indigenous tribes and therefore, the government must consider our demand seriously," the FKJGP leader said.
Chief minister Mukul Sangma had admitted that the entry of illegal immigrants into the state was alarming.
Earlier, the erstwhile members of the NCP had also demanded for strong legislation to check influx of illegal immigrants in the state.
"The state requires a strong legislation not only to check illegal immigrants entering our state but also to protect the genuine tribals and nontribals people who have been citizens of the state," leader of Opposition Conrad K Sangma said.
