Imphal, July 29 2016 :
A three-day orientation/training programme for Manipuri Muslims who would be going on Haj pilgrimage this year was opened today by Chief Minister O Ibobi at the erstwhile Guwahati High Court complex, North AOC.
Altogether 353 Manipuri Muslims would be going on Haj pilgrimage this year.
Although the State's quota for the maximum number of Haj pilgrims for this year is just 135 the number was increased to 353 at the intervention of the Chief Minister.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the orientation programme, Ibobi emphasised on the importance of secularism for harmony and rapid advancement of a society.
He prayed that all the Haj pilgrims of the State may go to Mecca and return home safe and sound.
Pointing out that Manipur is inhabited by many communities, the Chief Minister asserted that all issues and conflicts should be resolved through dialogue.
Though Manipuri Muslims are numerically small, they have been making rapid strides in the field of education since the past few years.
The State Government has also made 40 per cent reservation for Manipuri Muslims during recruitment in Education Department.
The State Government has been exploring a suitable site for construction of a Haj House.
Agriculture and Fishery Minister Abdul Nasir, Parliamentary Secretary Amin Shah and MLA Md Fazur Rahim were also seated on the dais as presidium members.
