Imphal, March 29, 2014:
A young woman committed suicide by consuming a toxic substance at Moirang Sribol Leikai, Bishnupur district under Moirang police station yesterday.
Naorem (N) Konjengbam (O) Asha alias Bembem (18) w/o Tomba was found unconscious near a canal in the middle of paddy fields about a kilometre away from her home at around noon.
A bottle of pesticide and a glass tumbler were found nearby.
She was taken to Moirang CHC only at around 11.30 pm but was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Asha hailed from Serou Mayai Leikai.
Her father's name is Nanda but her mother is no more.
She grew up at maternal grand-parents' home at Awang Potshangbam Khullen.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this evening, Asha's grand uncle Laishram Manglem said that Asha was married to Konjengbam Yaima alias Tomba s/o Mani of Moirang Sribol Leikai on December 8, 2013. As Asha was too young, her family did not perform any ceremony.
She was sent over and the marriage was held at the groom's place.
Not long after the marriage, Yaima brought home another pregnant woman.
"On learning about Asha's death, we went to Moirang Sribol Leikai.
There we saw preparations being made for cremation," Manglem said.
Although the exact circumstances leading to Asha's death are not clear, but it does look suspicious, he said.
Saying that Asha was found in the paddy at about noon, Manglem questioned as to why she was taken to health centre in late night.
Quilt and phanek kept at Asha's room were found stained with human sputum but no such stain was seen on the clothes worn by her.
Moreover, wounds were seen on her face, thigh and hands.
Her lips did not smell anything which may indicate consumption of pesticide, Manglem said.
He went on to allege that it was not a case of suicide but murder.
He also demanded befitting punishment for all the culprits.
The corpse has been taken to RIMS morgue after a case has been registered at Moirang police station.
