Kakching, November 28 2022:
At least eight persons landed in hospital after consuming fermented soybean at Kakching yesterday.
The eight persons are suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting and other health complications.
They are receiving treatment at the Kakching District Hospital.
They hail from Phousupat Leikai, Moirangthem Leikai and Chumnang in Kakching.
Sources said they bought the fermented soybean (Hawaijar) from a woman at Kakching Phousupat Leikai.
She usually visits houses selling fermented soybeans.
The eight people bought fermented soybean from her on November 25 .
After consuming it, they began experiencing nausea, vomiting and other health complications including diarrhoea.
As over-the-counter medicines couldn't cure their illness, they were rushed to the District Hospital Kakching for treatment, said a source.
First, Naorem Bishworjit (45) and his wife Naorem Ongbi Bijeya (35) of Kakching Moirangthem Leikai were rushed to the hospital on November 26 morning.
A day later on November 27 evening, K Sarat (60) and K Jenita of Kakching Chumnang and Keisham Nancy (11), Keisham Kumar (55), Mayanglambam Bidya (20) and Nongmaithem Meneka (32) of Kakching Phousupat Leikai were rushed to hospital.
Family members said those who consumed the fermented soybean directly developed serious health complications.
Those who consumed it by boiling were able to overcome their illness with over-the-counter medicines, they added.
While the exact cause of the health complications is not known yet, they suspect it to be the fermented soybean they consumed.
