Imphal, July 28 2022:
BJP State unit president A Sarda has asked the Congress leaders to apologise for passing derogatory remarks against President Droupadi Murmu by Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chaudhury.
Reportedly, several BJP workers in Manipur led by A Sarda burnt an effigy of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhury after taking out a short procession from Nityaipat Chuthek at Keishampat junction for 'demeaning the President by calling her Rashtrapatni'.
Speaking to media persons, A Sarda claimed that Congress is a party which undermines the interest of women, poor and tribal communities.
She then asked Adhir Ranjan Chaudury to tender an apology for the Rashtrapatni remark to the people of the Nation.
In another instance, a group of BJP supporters led by BJYM president Manoharmayum Barish Sharma also torched an effigy of Sonia Gandhi in front of Congress Bhavan and raised slogans such as "Sonia Gandhi Murdabad", "Rahul Gandhi Murdabad" and "Narendra Modi Zindabad" among others.
As the BJP supporters started kicking the gate of MPCC, the police personnel stationed there exchanged words with the protesters and closed the gate later to prevent untoward incidents.
The protesters were later dispersed from the area by a team of City police.
Meanwhile, the MPCC has cautioned of taking the matter to the High Court if the police don't register an FIR against Manoharmayum Barish Sharma and some of his associates who allegedly attacked the office of MPCC within 24 hours.
Speaking to media persons, MPCC general secretary (administration) Soibam Jeeten said that they have not taken the matter lightly as the BJYM volunteers not only destroyed several structures and raised unfounded allegations against the Congress leaders but also attacked the police personnel on duty.
He claimed that the BJYM team forcibly entered the premises of Congress Bhavan and attempted to bum down the office of Congress.
Saying that M Barish Sharma had attacked the office of MPCC earlier too, he urged the authority concerned to take strong action against him and send a message that no one is above the law of the land.
He urged the police to arrest Manoharmayum Barish Sharma, Robert Oinam, Suraj Waikhom, Tomthin Moirangcha, Bimol Moirangthem, Victor Gurumayum and their associates who attacked the office of Congress immediately.
As per sources, the Congress party is likely to take up the matter on the fifth day of the second session of Manipur Legislative Assembly if the police don't initiate strong actions against the BJYM volunteers who vandalised the office of Congress party.
Till the time of filing this report, it is not yet clear whether the police have registered an FIR as demanded by Congress or not.
Senior spokesperson of Congress N Bhupenda said that every citizen has the right to air their grievance or hold a democratic protest but "what the BJYM had done was unlawful".
