Imphal, February 26 2015:
Mobile service providers which are operating in Manipur are not under the control of the State Government.
Nonetheless, their operations are reviewed by the State level committee and district level committees from time to time so as to improve their service, Chief Minister O Ibobi stated in the State Assembly today.
Responding to a call attention motion raised by Kh Joykisan about unreliable mobile connectivity in the State, Ibobi stated that all the 5/6 mobile service providers operating in the State are controlled by the Telecom Authority of India.
The State Government has limited roles in any effort towards providing better mobile and internet connectivity to the people of Manipur.
Nonetheless, different committees have been reviewing the service quality of the mobile service providers from time to time both at the State and district level with the common motive of improving mobile and internet connectivity in the State.
Efforts are on to provide round the clock power supply to all mobile towers.
Moreover, mobile service providers have been asked to install solar power panels in all mobile towers as stand-by power source so that all mobile towers remain operational even when there is no conventional power supply.
Informing that development of an IT park has been completed, Ibobi announced that the Government has formulated a plan to develop a special economic zone exclusively for information technology.
An IT policy has been already framed and the same has been approved by the Government.
Earlier, raising the call attention motion, Joykisan sought the Chief Minister's attention towards the poor and frustrating mobile service being offered to the people of Manipur.
