Food stocks dry up in Imphal ; Prices sky rocket in valley areas

Imphal, November 24 2016: Most of the wholesale shops at Khwairamband Keithel have stopped selling food items as the stocks have dried up due to the economic blockade imposed by the UNC.

Shops have stopped selling potatoes, onions, pulses, garlic, edible oil, atta and many other essential items as no more trucks have been able to reach the valley for the last 10 days.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, a shopkeeper said that since no more trucks have been able to reach Imphal, shopkeepers have basically run out of things to sell.

The prices of the remaining stock of food items have skyrocketed despite some discrepancies with other hill areas as compared to Imphal valley.

According to a source, potatoes which used to sell for Rs 20 per Kg is now being sold at Rs 50-55 per Kg whereas in Senapati, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi it is being sold at Rs 30, 40-50 and 40 per Kg respectively.

In Imphal, the price of onions has reached Rs 100 per kg compared to Rs 20/Kg before the blockade.

However, onions are being sold at Rs 30, 60 and 50 per Kg at Senapati, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi respectively.

Before the blockade, garlic used to cost Rs 100 per Kg but now it has reached Rs 260 in the valley whereas in Senapati it is being sold at Rs 200.Dals and pulses used to sell for Rs 40/Kg but now it has climbed to Rs 100/Kg in the valley while it is being sold at Rs 50/Kg in Senapati, Kangtak is now being sold at Rs 110/Kg in the valley whereas in Senapati it is sold at Rs 50/kg.Mairongbi, Moong and Channa have now reached Rs 150,180 and 130 per Kg respectively in Imphal while in Senapati, they are being sold at Rs 80, 100 and 110 respectively.

At Churachandpur, Potato is sold at Rs 60/Kg and Dal at Rs 110/Kg, Cabbage is sold at Rs 30/Kg and Onion Rs 60/Kg while Egg is being sold at Rs 7/pc.At Ukhrul Potato is sold at Rs 30/40 per Kg and onion at Rs 40/50 per Kg .
