PDS rice sent to Moreh?

Imphal, August 23 2013 :
A strong suspicion has been raised about sending rice to Moreh although rice is the staple diet for majority of the people and is a listed item under Public Distribution System.
According to a source, around 180 truck loads of rice are sent to Moreh from Imphal every month and three transporters are involved in the trade.
Of the three transporters, one is a former MLA who was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly once.
Export of rice through Moreh in clandestine manner has seen a quantum jump in the last couple of years.
Another source in Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Department informed that the department has decided to investigate and find out how rice listed as PDS item is exported through Moreh.
Mode of authorisation given to ADC Moreh, ADC Kangpokpi and ADC Jiribam are not similar.
While ADC Kangpokpi and ADC Jiribam are authorised to lift PDS rice at the level of a district, ADC Moreh is authorised to lift PDS rice only for Tengnoupal and Moreh sub-divisions.
It is logic defying for 180 trucks to carry rice on Imphal-Moreh road every month when the ADC Moreh is authorised to lift rice only for the two sub-divisions.
Given these disturbing and inexplicable reports, the department has decided to conduct a thorough investigation together with other relevant authorities, informed the source.
