Sexual assault accused remanded to police custody

Imphal, November 22 2020:
Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal East on Saturday remanded 23-year-old Chandam Rabichandra alias Ibomcha to 5 days police custody for alleged sexual assault and attempt to murder a woman from Imphal East.
Producing the accused before the Court, the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case through Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) submitted that the woman and the accused were known to each other for only about five days according to family members.
On November 19, the woman went out of her house and was allegedly assaulted physically and sexually by the accused (Rabichandra) near a power house in Imphal East and left her there unconscious.
Next morning, locals found the woman unconscious and informed family members.
They then evacuated the woman to PHC Heingang and JNIMS for treatment.
Accused Chandam Rabichandra had surrendered himself before Sagolmang Police soon after the incident came to light on November 20 morning.
During the course of investigation, the accused was arrested by Women Police, Imphal East but he was not disclosing the fact of the case during interrogation, submitted the IO and prayed for 5 days police custody remand.
The Court on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the IO, remanded the accused to 5 days police custody till November 25.It may be mentioned that a JAC formed against the incident had alleged that the woman was called out from her house by the accused on November 19 at around 7 pm on the pretext of eloping.
The accused allegedly assaulted her sexually at gun point and attempted to murder her.
He then dumped her thinking she was dead, alleged the JAC demanding stringent punishment of the accused at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the Organisation for Indian Women Against Crimes and Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup have also demanded stringent punishment for Rabichandra.
