Political parties resolve to oppose delimitation

Imphal, June 15 2020:
Political parties active in the State have unanimously resolved to oppose the notification issued by the Government of India in February this year for carrying out delimitation exercise in the State based on the 2001 census report.
A joint meeting of 14 political parties was held today at Congress Bhavan here under the aegis of MPCC and the meeting deliberated on the delimitation issue.
The meeting jointly presided by ex-Chief Minister O Ibobi and MPCC president M Okendro was attended by representatives of INC, BJP, MPP, NPP, NCP, AAP, MNDF, Shiv Sena, CPI, AITC, AIFB, RS, NEIDP and CPI (M) .

However, no NPF representative was present at the meeting.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, M Okendro said that the 14 political parties unanimously agreed to oppose the scheduled delimitation exercise based on 2021 census report.
The gathering also agreed to hold another round of meeting on June 17 at the office of BJP.
Veteran politician O Joy said that the delimitation exercise based on 2001 census report was deferred earlier but the Government of India issued a notification in February this to go ahead with the same delimitation exercise.
O Joy then hailed the unanimous decision of all political parties to oppose the same notification.
He said that legal intervention would be sought from the High Court or the Supreme Court, if necessary.
Joy also urged the Government to table the matter before the State Cabinet and take an appropriate decision.
He said that they would go to Delhi and talk with concerned Central Ministers, if necessary.
CPI leader Dr M Nara said that the issue of delimitation should be fought collectively in the interest of the State.
The meeting also constituted a drafting committee comprising of five members with Dr M Nara as chairman.
Other members of the committee are Dr Jilasana (NPP), O Nabakishore (INC), Th Manihar (AAP) and E Johnson (BJP) .
