Imphal, February 15 2011:
Distinguished film maker Aribam Syam has raised serious concern over errors and false data about Manipuri cinema published in General Knowledge text books published by different reputed publishing firms based in India.
These wrong information has the potential to mislead the younger generations if not corrected in time, Syam said.
He was speaking at the release function of a compendium of essays authored by Yambem Tombi Devi and christened "Cinema, Cinema and Cinema" .
The book release function held at the conference hall of Government Dance College, Palace Compound was organised by Ashangba Communication.
The function was graced by Aribam Syam as chief guest and Managing Director of the Manipur Film Development Corporation Dr K Sobita Devi as president.
Speaking at the occasion, Syam said that he detected many errors in some articles written in General Knowledge books about Manipuri cinema published by book firms based outside the State.
On the other hand, there are no books about Manipuri cinema.
Neither any proper documentation has been made on the evolution of Manipuri cinema, he observed.
To avoid errors committed by writers based outside the State, there is a need for proper documentation and publication of books on Manipuri cinema, Syam asserted.
He observed that the number of Manipuri films produced in the last few years might be larger than any other regional films of India excepting Hindi and Tamil films.
However, Manipuri films produced in the last few years lacked quality for there is no culture of healthy critiquing and improvisation.
Dr K Sobita said that necessary initiatives have been taken up to publish books on Manipuri cinema.
For this, Rs 2 lakhs have been earmarked, she added.
