Speaker at the awareness rally, T Brajakumar said from times immemorial, men had settled along the river banks and survived utilising the river and its resources.
The uncontrolled and unthoughtful acts of humans have littered and polluted the water bodies, the same goes for water bodies in Manipur, he added.
Reiterating the importance of rivers and lakes, he added that it is impossible to survive without water and in the case of Manipur, widespread deforestation has resulted in 42 percent of springs connected to rivers to dry out.
He added that the department has initiated various steps and schemes to protect, preserve and safe the rivers and other water bodies with the support from the locals.
He also added that the public has a huge role to play in saving the water bodies and it is high time the people stopped throwing garbage and waste in the rivers.
