Flood affects over 400 houses in Mizoram

Aizawl, June 13 2017:
Over 400 houses have been submerged as Tlawng river and Khawthlangtuipui river overflowed their banks in Mizoram caused by incessant rainfall since Monday.
However, there was no report of human casualty so far.
Sources said that at least 350 dwelling houses in Tlabung sub division of Mizoram-Bangladesh border have been submerged after Khawthlangtuipui river began to overflow its bank since last night.
The sources added that 121 houses in Tlabung village were also submerged by water, while five houses have been swept away by the flood.
Apart from dwelling houses, a Church building, a mini indoor stadium, the ICDS Centre, waiting sheds, VC House, slaughter houses and some tea stalls in Tlabung village have also been flooded, sources from Tlabung said.
Meanwhile, over 500 volunteers of Young Mizo Association (YMA) swung into action helping the distressed people.
It is said that over 138 families have been evacuated to safer places.
The affected were shifted to community halls and school buildings, the sources added.
The flood of Khawthlangtuipui river has also cut off communication as an important road between Tlabung and Borapansury in Mizoram's Lunglei district bordering Bangladesh has sunk at two places.
Venghlun and Bazar Veng localities in Tlabung village have also been cut off from the rest of the State due to flood.
As per information received, over 1500 families in Tlabung sub-division have been affected by the flood causing a loss of over Rs 10 lakh.
However, there was no report of human casualty till of the time of filing this report.
In a similar incident, over 69 houses in Sairang village, about 20 km from the State capital Aizawl, have been flooded due to inundation of Tlawng river caused by incessant rains.
Officials of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department said that 9 houses were fully submerged, while over 60 houses have been partially submerged by the swollen river.
Officials said that 13 boats and 11 boat engines have been reportedly missing purportedly swept away by the flood.
So far 53 families have been evacuated to a safer place and rescue operation is on, they said.
There was no human casualty reported in this area, they added.
Meanwhile, Aizawl West-I Assembly Constituency MLA K Sangthuama visited Sairang village today and gave material support including 15 rice bags and financial assistance amounting to Rs 3 lakh to the affected people through the rescue team.
