Lunghar selected for water rejuvenation pilot project

The State Government has selected Lunghar Village for imple-mentation of a pilot project on spring water rejuvenation in Manipur.
Joint Director of Forest, Environment and Climate Change Brajakumar expressed that at least 50 per cent of the State's naturally available spring water sources are drying up and it has drastically reduced the volume of water of many rivers in the State.
He said that the department has minutely observed the profiles of all catchment areas in the State and subsequently selected Lunghar village for the project.
He said that Phangrei mountain range areas of Lunghar village is a natural water reserve which supplies drinking water to the whole of Ukhrul district headquarters.

A team of experts from Forest, Environment & Climate Change Dept, ACWADAM and ICIMOD would be stationed at Lunghar village for one week till November 16 to locate vulnerable springs, he added.
It is reported that altogether 26 spring water sources have been identified at Lunghar for study and mapping.
The expert team headed by Dr Himanshu Kulkarni will hold interactive sessions with villagers and educate them on conservation of the area to revive spring water sources.
After completing geological survey and mapping, the Forest , Environment & Climate Dept will prepare a DPR and necessary documents and submit the report to Niti Ayog to formulate policies for rejuvenating spring water.
