One cadre each of the PREPAK and PULF outfits surrendered to the Commander of 27 Sector Assam Rifles, Brig Surendra Mehta and Superintendent of Police (Churachandpur) GB Sharma at Churachandpur today.
Surprisingly the names of the cadres and other details were not given.
The surrender ceremony was organised by the 27 Sector AR under the aegis of Red Shield Division, said a PIB (DW) release adding that the event started with a prayer by Bishop Mung and a brief about activities of security forces, traditional handing over of weapons by the surrendered cadres to the Brigadier.
While conveying that the PREPAK cadre deserted the outfit and was motivated to join the mainstream, PIB maintained that the PULF cadre was disgruntled with the outfit and was convinced to forsake violence due to persuasion by the security forces and family matter.
Addressing the gathering, that included village chiefs, tribal body heads, student leaders, NGO representatives and religious leaders, Brig Surendra Mehta informed that Red Shield Division with a view to improving security situation in the State has been encouraging such surrenders.
He also stressed on the need for a collective effort in encouraging UG cadres to return to the mainstream and find out ways to contain the armed movement in Manipur.
The civil society appreciating endeavours of 27 SectorAssam Rifles commented that such events will go a long way in fostering ties of the local populace with the security forces and motivate other cadres to abjure violence, added the release.
