KLNP likely to be expanded

Whereas 60 hectares of Loktak Lake's phumdi is set for amalgamation with the Keibul Lamjao Na-tional Park (KLNP), the Ministry of Environment and Forest has given its approval for plantation of tree saplings over 9906 hectares in the State under the Green India Mission.
One high ranking officer of Forest Department which is the State's nodal department for Green India Mission told The Sangai Express that the Centre has started releasing funds for implementation of Green India Mission.
Green India Mission is one of the eight major components of the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
The Government has set a target of planting five million tree saplings across the country under the same mission.
In line with the Government of India's target, the State Government has formulated a perspective plan and the plan has been approved by the Ministry of Environment and Forest.
The State Government has, meanwhile, set a target of relocating 300 hectares of phumdi within Keibul Lamjao National Park in addition to planting tree saplings over 39917 hectares.
Tree saplings would be planted over 9906 hectares and 60 hectares of Loktak Lake's phumdi would be amalgamated with the Keibul Lamjao National Park within the current financial year.
Due preparations for the tree plantation campaign has been already initiated, informed a source.
For implementation of the mission, the Forest Department has identified 139 joint forest management committees, added the source.
