Imphal, June 07 2017:
A scuffle broke out between the people and officials of Mayang Imphal Municipal Council over the construction of Mayang Imphal bazar toilet complex.
The incident occurred after Mayang Imphal Municipal Council, under the sponsorship of the State Government, began work on the construction of a toilet complex on the front side of the bazar which the people claimed affected major portions of the road.
Speaking to media persons at a public meeting organised at Mayang Imphal Konchak regarding the issue, Mayang Imphal Keithel Changba Konchak Lambi Kanba Lup convenor Ningthoujam Gunindro said that the people do not object the construction of the toilet complex but will vehemently oppose any move which affects the road.
He stated that during a bomb blast at Mayang Imphal bazar in 2009, the narrow road resulted in a stampede as people rushed to get out of danger.
"The hole dug for the construction of the toilet complex would not only affect the people of Konchak but also the people of other villages who regularly use the road", he claimed.
Gunindro urged the State Government to take up necessary steps to stop the construction of the complex and threatened to boycott the construction work, the Mayang Imphal Municipal Council building and even block Mayai Lambi if the authority concerned fail to heed the people.
On the other hand, Mayang Imphal Municipal Council Chairperson, Asem Radhamani, speaking to media persons at Imphal, claimed that the construction of the toilet complex would not result in any inconveniences for the people and the incident is the result of some vested interests.
The Chairperson pointed out that the site of the complex had been approved after MAHUD Minister Th Shyamkumar and MLA K Robindro personally inspected the location selected by the Municipal Council.
"Around 14 feet of road will still remain even after the construction of the road", added the Chairperson and condemned politicising the matter.
Radhamani further urged the opposing side to approach the Council and have a sensible dialogue regarding the issue.
The Chairperson also alleged that the people thrashed the Council's SO Ch Khelen, Mayang Imphal Bazaar Shopkeepers Union secretary Ch Sanjoy during the scuffle and even vandalised the store items of Ch Sanjoy.
