Imphal, April 07 2020:
In the wake of the recent spate of attacks fuelled by racism against people from the North East in different parts of mainland India, the Manipur Students' Association Delhi (MSAD) is organising an online placard campaign against racism.
A press release issued by the Delhi-based student body appealed to all to upload a photo of their own with a placard or a paper, written with words of their own choice with a common hashtag "Fight against racism" or "End racism" on their own social media accounts and to send the same through MSAD's Facebook account.
Strongly condemning the recent incident wherein pan was spat on a Manipur woman by a biker in Mumbai, the MSAD recalled many such racial attacks and racism-fuelled murders of North East people in different cities of India.
On August 13, 2017, Sidharth Moirangthem was mysteriously murdered at Hauz Khas Village, Delhi.
The September 2017 case of disappearance of Pravish Chanam followed by his suspicious death would remain an unforgettable attack against people from the North East, it said.
On January 24, 2014, two natives of Manipur were assaulted and thrashed by locals of Kotla Mubarakpur, Delhi.
In October 2014, Shaloni, a 29 year old native of Manipur was beaten to death by a group of 5/6 men in Kotla Mubarakpur, Delhi.
There were two separate incidents in which a student from the North East was beaten by three men in Bangalore for not speaking Kannada and another student from the North East was beaten by seven men in Gurgaon, Haryana.
In January 2014, Nido Tania, a 20 year old student from Arunachal Pradesh was murdered in Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi, the MSAD recalled.
It also mentioned the incident of spitting pan on another Manipur woman on March 22 at Vijay Nagar, Delhi.
The MSAD then called upon everyone to join hands and fight racism collectively.
