Imphal, May 06 2016 :
The JAC constituted against the firing and injuring of 14 persons at Nungei village has said that they are ready to impose a general strike if the three persons who were involved in the incident are not arrested at the earliest.
It may be mentioned that 14 persons including four children were injured when three motorcycle borne persons fired indiscriminately at a group of people who were sitting at a Meira Paibi shed at Nungei at around 8 pm on April 11.Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, JAC convenor Sanjoy Khaidem said that the JAC and Nungei villagers have been demanding the Government to arrest the miscreants and punish them befittingly.
However, no action is visible from the side of the Government till date, he said.
Around 400 villagers staged a sit-in-protest at Keishampat to press the demand some time back.
The protesters also took out a rally towards the CM's Secretariat the same day, he said.
After the police blocked the rallyists near Nupi Lan Memorial Complex, seven selected persons were allowed to meet the Chief Minister that day, he said.
The convenor said that the villagers have been restraining from resorting to intense agitations because of the assurance given by the Chief Minister.
As the assurance has not been translated into action till date, the JAC held a huge public meeting in the presence of Anjuman Islah-e-Muaashrah and AMMOCOC leaders and reaffirmed the earlier decision.
On May 2 again, some unknown persons fired several rounds of fire towards Nungei village.
On May 4, the Government pulled out IRB personnel who were deployed at the village to protect the villagers.
Peeved with the Government move, the villagers have been blocking Nungei road, he said.
Although, the Government has brought back the IRB team to the village, tense situation still prevails at the village, he said.
Sanjoy further said that a team from Lilong police station led by their OC searched for JAC leaders at Nungei on May 4.The OC allegedly told the villagers that arresting the assailants is not a simple task, he said.
Sanjoy said that the police is unable to arrest the three persons although the villagers had already provided their names.
As such, the Government must look into the matter at the earliest before the villagers announce a general strike, he said.
Saying that the villagers would also try to pull up the culprits on their own, Sanjoy said that the Government must be held responsible for any untoward incident.
