DESAM hosts academic discourse on COVID-19 & education

An academic discourse on "COVID-19 and Education: Diagnosis and Prognosis" was held at MIMS (Manipur Institute of Management Studies) conference hall, Manipur University today.
Held as part of the 13th Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand Day, 2020, the academic discourse was organised by the Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand, a conglomerate of bodies including DESAM, AMGASE, AIMS, ATSUM, AMRPSWA, AMSSTA, AMESTA, AMCTA, AMSGO, CASA and MGHSLWA.
Various academicians, scholars and experts discussed the present COVID-19 situation in the State and its impact on the education sector and took four resolutions including a demand to formulate an appropriate SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for reopening educational institutions.
The Government should take up necessary measures to safely reopen the educational institutions at the earliest and formulate required and suitable SOPs.
The Government should also consult all stakeholders to find feasible ways to open the institutions and run them effectively.
Secondly, the Government should encourage entrepreneurship and offer skill development courses.
Institutes for such fields should be established.
Thirdly, students who have returned from other cities should be given option to pursue their further studies in the State.
The Government should take up prompt actions and expedite necessary processes to accommodate these students in the State's schools and colleges.
The Government and authorities concerned should develop separate curricula to be followed at present and post COVID.
Higher education examinations should be reformed accordingly to suit the present situation.
Special arrangement and necessary steps should be taken up for Class X and XII students.
Retired IAS officer Dr RK Nimai moderated the programme.
He stressed on the need for changing the 'aged' education policy to improve the education system in the State.
Even though the school education is fairly doing well, the higher education system needs to be changed, he said.
MIMS Director Professor Ch Ibohal; Dhanamanjuri College of Teachers' Education Associate Professor Kh Dinesh and AMRPSWA president Doren Kha Nganba attended the event, among others.
